About

Dr Chew graduated from NUS with his basic medical degree (MBBS) in 1989. After he obtained his higher surgical qualifications [(MMed (Surg), FRCS(Ed), FRCS(Glas)], he entered advanced surgical training in orthopaedics and successfully exited to become a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery [FAMS (Orth)] and became a member of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore in 2001.

He has a special interest in Hand and Microsurgery, and was awarded the Ministry of Health’s Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship to undergo advanced training in Hand and Microsurgery in the prestigious Christine M Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsugery / Kleinert-Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Upon his return, he went on to exit in Hand Surgery in 2002, to become the first, and only one of two surgeons to be registered as a specialist in both Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery. He worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital since 1996.

His clinical interests include managing fractures of the distal radius and hand, wrist conditions, arthroscopy of the wrist and small joints of the hand, reconstruction for deformities of rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis including total joint replacement for the wrist and fingers, and microsurgical reconstruction of both upper and lower limbs including replantations, vascularised free flap and toe-to-hand transfers. His passion is in good patient care.

Dr Chew was the Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of NUS until 2016. He was awarded the “Top 10 Teachers” award by Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, and was also conferred the “Outstanding Teacher Award” in Orthopaedics undergraduate teaching by NUS in 2009-2010. He is also actively involved in the training of orthopaedic and hand surgeons and served in the Specialist Training Committees (STC) for both Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He was in the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) of the Residency Training Programme for Orthopaedic Surgery from 2011 to 2013. He is currently still an RAC member for Hand Surgery since 2012.

Dr Chew served as the Head of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital from 2007 to 2011. He also helped to set up the Hand and Microsurgery Section in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, with the help of 3 other specialists in Hand Surgery, and was the Head of the Section from 2008 to 2012. He left for private practice since 2012.

Dr Chew also served as President of the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery from 2004-2006. He is interested in clinical research and has authored 26 articles in peer reviewed journals, and 5 book chapters in hand surgery.

His other interests include softball, badminton and golf.
